John Eldredge in his book, Walking with God, relates a story of how he was at his cabin one summer and wanted to take his friends down the Snake River to show them the wild life in the area. He writes, “Hopes were high of seeing Bull Moose, elk, and who knows what else.”
He goes on to share that as they went down the river they did not see a single animal – not even in the places where they normally would be. You can only imagine his disappointment. But as he shares there was a lesson to be learned here. I’ll let him tell it from here. “We passed the den of some river otters we’d seen last year. Nobody was home. We passed the island that moose are always hanging out on. Nope. Just a beaver or two. Frustrated, I made the group paddle an extra mile through a back channel where I knew the moose had to be. But no. The sun passed behind Mount Moran, and everyone was enjoying a spectacular sunset in the clouds above. But I missed it entirely, because I was so disappointed we didn’t see wildlife. I was totally focused on what God was not giving, and missed what He was giving.”
